"Mile Die Club", Way to Die #559, is the third death to be featured in "Waking Up Dead", which aired on February 3, 2010.
Plot[]
Nigel was a disastrous bastard and abusive husband who mistreated his wife Naomi, which decided to leave him. Nigel yelled at Naomi that she was his wife and that she would do what he said, but she refused and left for the airport. In a last effort to make her change her mind, Nigel went with her, but it was useless. Nigel told her not to get on the plane and pointed out that the wedding ring meant something, but Naomi was determined after he left her right eye black.
Axel Katehakis: A guy who's trying to stop her wife from leaving is desperate. His nervous system is highly aroused, there's a lot of dopamine and adrenaline flowing through his body, and he's no longer using his thinking brain.
Nigel told her that she would have to step over his corpse to get on the plane and Naomi liked the idea. Naomi got to the plane without any problem and her miserable, damned pig of a husband couldn't do anything to stop her. Before boarding, she threw away her wedding ring and felt much more relieved; the stewardess wished Naomi a good flight, which she would have without anything to worry about.
But what no one knew, was that Nigel was planning to get into the cargo hold of the plane, before September 11, 2001, security was a joke. The relaxed atmosphere of that small Clarkdale airport allowed Nigel to sneak inside. He wasn't going to let her leave. Once he was inside, the door was sealed... but what Nigel did not know was that as soon as the door was sealed, his fate was also sealed.
While the plane took flight, the temperature of the atmosphere slowly dropped. Upon reaching cruising altitude, the air temperature in the unheated hold was cold enough to freeze mercury and human skin instantly. Inside, Nigel was suffering and writhing while he was being freezing alive. He screamed for help, but no one would come to save him. He ultimately froze to death and the cold-hearted bastard was sent to Violence, the seventh circle of hell, where he would be boiled alive for all eternity.
Dr. DJ Green: When someone is in the fuselage of the jet and ... to high altitude, they will suffer the effects of progressive hypothermia, and lack of oxygen. (CGI freezing human is shown) There's basically phases of hypothermia, that will go through the range from the onset - the shivering, goosebumps, to progressive - confusion, muscle discoordination. Eventually the heart will slow down, pulse will slow down, respiration slow down - you breathe slower. There's just a progressive cellular dysfunction, and death.
When the plane reached the ground and the door opened, they found the frozen corpse of the miserable bastard.
Narrator: Nigel died as he lived: A cold-hearted bastard.
Transcript[]
Nigel: You're my wife. You'll do as I tell you! You're going nowhere!
Narrator: Nigel was a turd of a husband. He abused his wife Naomi, and now she was leaving him.
Naomi: I'm done.
Narrator: In a last-ditch effort, Nigel jumped on her airport shuttle to try and change her mind.
Nigel: You're not getting on that plane, you got that?! Get that in your thick head!
Narrator: The fresh black eye Naomi was sporting gave her all the resolve she needed.
Nigel: You see that ring? It means something!
Axel Katehakis: A guy who's trying to stop his wife from leaving is desperate. His nervous system is highly aroused, there's a lot of dopamine and adrenaline flooding through his body, and he's no longer using his thinking brain.
Nigel: Over my dead body you're getting on that plane, you hear that?
Naomi: Wishful thinking.
Stewardess: Welcome aboard!
Narrator: Before boarding, Naomi threw off her wedding ring and felt a thousand pounds lighter.
Stewardess: Have a nice flight!
Narrator: Back before 9/11, security was a joke. The relaxed atmosphere at this small airport allowed Nigel to sneak right into a cargo bay on his wife's plane. He just couldn't let go.
(The doors to the cargo bay are shut by an airport worker, and the plane took off)
Narrator: What Nigel didn't realize once the door was sealed, so was his fate. As the airliner climbed out, the temperature in the thinning atmosphere dropped lower, and lower. At 6000 ft, it was a teeth-chattering 23 degrees. At 18000, a bone-chilling minus 5. When it finally reached its cruising altitude of 32000 feet, the air temperature in this unheated cargo bay hit 50 degrees below zero, cold enough to freeze mercury, and human skin, instantly.
Nigel: (screaming and hitting the metal with fist) Help me! Help!
Dr. DJ Green: When someone is in the fuselage of a jet and ascends to high altitude, they will suffer the effects of progressive hypothermia, and lack of oxygen. (CGI freezing human is shown) There's basically phases of hypothermia, that will go through the range from the onset - the shivering, goosebumps, to progressive - confusion, muscle discoordination.
